Maasvlakte by Bart van Damme on Flickr.

A newly reclaimed land, a new biotope’ the Dutch government must have thought with its reintroduction plans of lions in the Maasvlakte. A highly controversial decision I must say since this big cat hasn’t been spotted in these parts since the Late Pleistocene. The fact the lion’s our national symbol undoubtly played a role in the decision making. All very well, but I haven’t seen any antelopes or such. What do they think the lions are going to feed on, the salty grasslands?
